Building your leadership cabinet

Every leader needs a leadership cabinet. A small group of advisers who help you be the best you possible. And who help keep you grounded, focused, and honest. In most cases these aren’t paid advisers — they’re people who know you, respect you, and are willing to be honest with you when you need that most.

Your leadership cabinet should help you:

  • Identify and navigate your blind spots
  • Know when you’re wrong
  • Brainstorm solutions to your biggest problems
  • Connect you with important external resources
  • Help you understand other points of view
  • Stay focused and motivated through the toughest times

The best advisers have the following traits:

  • Honesty
  • Willingness to challenge your thinking
  • Skills and experience that you don’t have
  • High emotional intelligence
  • Creative thinkers
  • Visionary
  • High integrity
  • Aligned with you on your vision and priorities

Do you have a personal leadership cabinet? Do they share the traits I’ve outlined above?
